Something I learned from my tour of Pearl Harbor is that the sacrifice means different things to different people and different things in different places. For some it is a noun; above a given thing, a loss suffered, an offering to something bigger. For others, the sacrifice is a verb. This is a performance, delivery, or a waiver of something important, something more important. And for the few, the sacrifice is a strategy.

Punchbowl Crater on the island of Oahu is called Pu'owaina, which means Hill of Sacrifice. When Hawaii travel and see different places related to World War II, Punchbowl Crater and National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific that is within it has always been the best place for me to think of the word sacrifice and their meanings.

I think it's because when you visit this site, where in ancient times offerings are made to the gods and the royalty of Hawaii, I see Lady of Columbia tower over the entrance to the monument. She represents motherhood. A different kind of sacrifice. And she said to represent the sacrifice of all mothers who have lost children in war – all mothers who have had to give up their children and watch them make their own decisions, their own sacrifices. His life for others, their struggle for freedom. A powerful reminder of what sacrifice means in action.

Following the Virgin of Columbia is the list of names of all those who have disappeared in action in the Pacific killed and his body resting somewhere in the Pacific sea – the bodies that have been lost, but the names have been immortalized. The cemetery also contains the persons whose names are unknown, but his remains are buried here. Another kind of sacrifice. A name lost, anonymous, private supply delivered to your home.

Punchbowl the crater is a solemn place. A site concerned. It sits overlooking a city that is alive and vital, its people, make their own daily sacrifices for the family and the work and time and money. Small decisions made every day, every moment. Sacrifice as a noun. Sacrifice as a verb.

It is good to go there. To pay their respects to men and women who preceded us in the sacrifice. To remember the ultimate sacrifice what it is: give your life for a belief, a principle, a form life, or for another. In this tropical paradise is good to go to the Hill of Sacrifice. It is good to keep in mind the sacrifices made strange to us. It is good to think in what we offer in our lives, what we are willing to sacrifice and why.

To remember.
