canyon tours from las vegas

Has anyone driven to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and back in one day?
We stay in Las Vegas for 3 nights and trying to Driving in the canyon. I think you can not access the Skywalk in the car – only via a bus tour. Is this correct? Does anyone have any idea time it would take to drive from Las Vegas to any other part of the Canyon? We only want it during the day.
Contrary to the posters above, I have actually been to both the Skywalk (Grand Canyon West) and the southern coastal National Park. First the Skywalk … Yes, you can drive west of Grand Canyon by car and many people do. It is mostly paved, but there is a 12mile stretch which is a gravel road unpaved and can be washboardy at times. You can do this in a normal car and certainly not need a 4WD, but I would not recommend something with a clearance really low and anyway, you will get dusty. The distance from Las Vegas is 121 miles and takes about 2.5 hours. Note however that because people driving too fast on the washboards in the road gravel and wash the car needed heavy then, many rental companies have a clause Vegas the boundary to take the car out of Nevada, to prevent people from using it to go the Skywalk. As for the Skywalk experience … It is important to note The Grand Canyon West is not part of Grand Canyon National Park and it is not anywhere near him (the park is 100 miles upstream). While the canyon is certainly deep and panoramic GC West, it is not nearly as deep, large or colorful and interesting than in the national park. Seeing Canyon GC to West is not the same as seeing the park. In addition, you can not walk or hike to the West GC, you must park to the small airport and buy a tour package – the lowest price which includes going to the Skywalk is about $ 80 per person. The Skywalk itself is not (IMHO) as interesting as it seems and he is not above the Colorado River or 4000 feet high as claimed by marketing. While some individuals have GC-West, many visitors left disappointed (he got 2 out of 5 stars from previous visitors on TripAdvisor). I would not worry too much about the reservations, they do not get that many people. As for visiting the coast of southern National Park … like other noted that it is about a 4.5 hours drive from Las Vegas along main highways and motorways. The park entrance is $ 25 per car (good for one week). You could certainly make it there and back in one long day of driving and get yourself gives you the flexibility to see what you want and stay as long as you want. However, you may want to consider a bus tour so that you can just sit and relax and let them take you (especially if you do not plan to get a rental car otherwise). the northern edge of National Park is approximately 4.5 hours From Las Vegas (and a little more interesting drive), but the North Rim Lodge, a visitor center and other facilities do not open until mid-May Boomer Gal – my apologies and I am wrong about other people visiting both.
However, we certainly did not need 4WD to reach the "Skywalk" (after all, full-size tour buses travel every day) and it is a journey much shorter days of Vegas, the South Rim. That said, I would still recommend the South Rim during the Skywalk and agree that it would be better to spend a night in the canyon (or Flagstaff / Williams) rather than in a day.
