Being disabled can certainly limit your options when you are traveling. This may be especially true if you want to visit the city of Venice, Italy. The bridges and all the steps can make move for most people a little hard. However, if you plan ahead, you may all have a great time during your visit to this city.

Most if not all hotels in Venice has elevators, but it is always a wise idea to make sure before you book. Also upon confirmation that the hotel has an elevator can be a good idea to find out the size of the lifts as this may be a factor in actually using it. Be several large hotels that have very small elevator that probably would not take into account large wheelchairs.

Make sure you visit the Azienda di Promozione Turistica which is the local tourist office. These individuals may provide a clue to some of the lifts for disabled people in some of the bridges in Venice. Also, when you visit this one of these offices be sure to get a map designed to help those with physical disabilities. In these maps you will see that the places that are accessible to people with disabilities are highlighted. Many times I've noticed that are highlighted in yellow, but that could change from year to year and only would make sure someone in the office before venturing out.

Venice in June 2004 approved a law requiring 80 bridges in the city to be accessible the disabled. At this point some of the work is complete, although some more work to do.

Alternatively it could only go with some industry experts. There is a great company called Italy which offers accessible tours for the physically disabled in Rome, Venice and Florence. They not only offer superior service the client, but since they have been in business since 1993 they have encountered and solved many of the obstacles they will face as a traveler with disabilities. It is certainly worth considering.

Best way to get to Capri, Italy?

I’m taking a tour of Greece and Italy next summer. My first stop is Capri, Italy. Capri is a small island off the coast of Naples. It has no airports, but there are a few ports that lead to Capri. What’s better? Hydrofoil or Ferry? How to get there? Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi ect.? use google maps or some other source to see the ports there. Then tell me what’s the least expensive way to get to Capri from New England.
